Interventions régionales en Afrique australe et de l’Est

Le FITRD compte un nombre important de membres dans la zone de l’AA&E. Les membres comprennent des réseaux nationaux {GFN}, dans 7 pays, à savoir le Rwanda, l’Ouganda, l’Ethiopie, le Kenya, la Tanzanie, le Zimbabwe et l’Afrique du Sud. S’y ajoutent des membres individuels du Malawi, de la Zambie, du Botswana et du Lesotho, des partenaires institutionnels tels que ILO ASIST Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa Transport Programme {SSATP}, UN Habitat, Animal Traction Network for Eastern and Southern Africa {ATNESA} et Practical Action/ITDG Afrique de l’Est.

Le plaidoyer au niveau des politiques a été une contribution capitale des GFN. En 2004, par exemple le GFN en Tanzanie a tenu une concertation pendant une demie journée regroupant 150 membres du Parlement afin de discuter d’une stratégie institutionnelle pour le financement et la gestion de routes en milieu rural et d’autres questions relatives à l’accès rural et à la réduction de la pauvreté en Tanzanie. Au Kenya, le GFN, en collaboration avec des partenaires comme Practical Action/ITDG, KENDAT, et ILO ASIST, a fait pression pour l’élimination des taxes sur l’importation des bicyclettes. Au Zimbabwe, le GFN travaille à l’incorporation d’approches plus orientées vers les pauvres dans la stratégie nationale de transport.

Les réseaux sont impliqués dans divers travaux de recherche, de plaidoyer et de réseautage. Les activités de recherche principales dans la région incluent des travaux sur Transport et VIH/SIDA le long des principaux corridors de transport, les liens entre transport et pauvreté, et des études de cas sur le transport sur les voies navigables du lac Victoria. De nouveaux thèmes de recherche sont abordés : plaques tournantes de transport ruraux, sécurité dans le transport en milieu rural, mobilité et santé
