Rural Transport Safety Studies- call for participation
2006-09-20

The International Forum for Rural Transport and Development (IFRTD) has been invited by UNECA (United Nations Economic Commission for Africa) to organise a panel on rural transport safety for the 4th Annual Road Safety Congress to be held in Ghana in March 2007.

In preparation the IFRTD Secretariat is commissioning small research studies in Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

Potential themes could include:

  • Safety from harrassment, particularly for women/girls, relating to the design of transport services and facilities.
  • Safety of poor peoples' property - eg. intermediate modes of transport.
  • Safety issues on community access roads.
  • Safety issues on other local infrastructure - footbridges, other water crossings, paths, tracks and water transport.
The funding available for each study is 1200 UK pounds sterling. In the first instance please email safety@ifrtd.org to express your interest with a brief indication of the rural transport safety issues you would like to address.  Please submit this expression of interest by the 22nd September 2006.
